Thinking about Winter and Cricket......
Squats Believe the hype about squats you hear from your strength training obsessed friends. Squats are the fastest way build strength in the legs and strength means more power with less injuries. They are also a powerful way to improve mobility in the hips. But squats are misunderstood. Meathead gym rats insist they only count if you have a bar on your back and at least 3 plates on either side. Bad personal trainers, meanwhile, insist anything bigger than a pink dumbbell will blow you up to the size of a house. The truth is that squat is a powerful and flexible exercise that is adaptable to your needs as a cricketer. It’s just a matter of picking the right squatting tool for the job.
Deadlifts
The deadlift is for the hips what the squat is for the knees; more strength, mobility and stability. It’s one of the most natural movements we do: bending down and picking something off the floor. Despite that, it’s rarely trained to be strong and efficient. 14 and 16 Premiers NEWCC would like to congratulate the two junior premiership sides – the Under 16/1s and the Under 14/1s.
Both results were a fantastic credit to all players, their coaches and support staff.
In terms of both games I provide the following summary:
Under 16s – Winning the toss and batting the boys produced their best batting display for the season. The openers got off to a solid start and we had a number of partnerships after that which usually is the key to posting a competitive score. At the close of our innings we ended on 177 and this was possible due to the solid batting in the middle order and with wickets in hand we were able to have a late flurry. The question was whether we had enough runs against Research’s batting line up – a team that had not been beaten all season – for which their batting can take significant credit.
However the more you are involved with junior sport, you should never be surprised by any results and our boys bowled and fielded brilliantly. We bowled Research out for 39 – a result it‘s fair to say no one saw coming.
Under 14s – Sent into bat our batting line up struggled against Lalor Stars bowling attack. Whilst we kept a number of our wickets in tact our run rate never really set a cracking pace and we finished our innings at 6/128 – the question was whether our team which had finished on top had made enough runs. It felt about 20-30 runs short but sometimes runs on the board are more important than you think.
When it came to our turn to bowl we bowled very tightly and kept the pressure on them but with about 6 overs to go they were sitting at 5/96 and around a run a ball – a bit closer than most players and supporters would have liked. But in a remarkable finish, Lalor Stars lost 5 wickets for 2 runs and the Under 14s were crowned premiers.
One day side WIN the Final With a crushing win, the one day boys came home in a canter. A great team effort all season and well deserved. WELL DONE BOYS!!!
